“Dweller on the Threshold” draws on the occult figure introduced in Bulwer-Lytton’s Zanoni and later reinterpreted in Theosophy. Shifting harmonies and restrained dissonance represent the accumulated fears, desires, attachments, and unresolved forces of the personality that confront the aspirant before deeper initiation. The Dweller is therefore not a guide, but the lower self made fully visible. Crossing the threshold requires recognition, mastery, and the subordination of these forces to the higher spiritual self.
